AI School Leadership Minute: What the AI Executive Order Means for Your School
Yesterday, President Trump signed a major Executive Order on AI in education. Here’s what you need to know. At the end, you’ll find a “What You Can Do Now” section.

1. AI Training for Teachers Is Now a Federal Focus
The Department of Education has been directed to prioritize grants that support teacher training in:
- Using AI to cut admin tasks
- Bringing AI into everyday lessons
- Teaching the fundamentals of AI and computer science

Guidance from the Department is due by late July.

2. New AI Tools for K–12 Are on the Way
A new White House Task Force will form public-private partnerships to:
- Build free AI lessons and tools
- Roll them out for classroom use within 180 days of announcement
- Focus on AI literacy and critical thinking

Both federal support and private partners will back these tools.

3. High School AI Courses and Certifications Will Grow
The Departments of Education and Labor, with the National Science Foundation, will:
- Expand dual enrollment and industry-recognized AI credential programs
- Encourage the use of WIOA funds to support youth AI training
- Prioritize grants for providers that commit to offering high school AI programs

This opens new career pathways for your students.

4. The “Presidential AI Challenge” Is Coming Soon
The White House will launch a national competition to:
- Celebrate student and educator use of AI
- Offer competitions by age group and region
- Push schools to solve real problems with AI

The plan is due within 90 days (by July 2025). The Challenge must be held within 12 months after that.

What You Can Do Now
1) Start aligning your PD and grant plans with the Executive Order.
2) Bring AI into teacher development this summer and fall.
3) Watch for new Department of Education updates (I’ll keep you posted).

I hope this was helpful and straight to the point.
