AI School Leadership Minute: A Simple Prompt That Unlocks Better Results
Problem: Tailoring ChatGPT outputs to your exact situation can be frustrating if you don’t know what to type in.
Solution: Start by asking ChatGPT what it needs from you to do the task. (It sounds silly, but it is so effective that I use it daily. See below.)
Here is the exact prompt I use to do this:
"I need to put together [insert what you're trying to do]. Ask me a list of questions you’d need to know to do this extremely well. I will answer them. After I answer them, put it together."
Here are some example scenarios on when you can use it—
Graduation speech: "I am a superintendent and need to put together the opening speech for graduation. Ask me a list of questions you would need to know to do this extremely well. I will answer them. After I answer them, put it together.”
Teacher appreciation message: “I want to write a teacher appreciation message for my staff. Ask me a list of questions you would need to know to do this extremely well. I will answer them. After I answer them, put it together.”
School board meeting agenda: “I need to put together the agenda for our upcoming school board meeting. Ask me a list of questions you would need to know to do this extremely well. I will answer them. After I answer them, put it together.”
Weekly parent newsletter: “I am a principal and need to write this week’s newsletter to families. Ask me a list of questions you would need to know to do this extremely well. I will answer them. After I answer them, put it together.”
This prompt:
1) Gives ChatGPT full context and understanding of nuances
2) Removes the guesswork for you
3) Gets you an answer tailored to your exact need
Use this whenever you want to do something with ChatGPT but are unsure what to give it.
To ChatGPT giving you exactly what you are looking for,
